Role Overview
As a Senior Network Engineer you will be a senior technical authority for the design, delivery and ongoing support of both our internal service-provider/datacentre network and our managed customer estates, working alongside our existing network and ISP engineering team. This is a hands-on senior role spanning routing, switching, firewalling and wireless across multiple vendors — with Fortinet (FortiGate / FortiManager) and Cisco (Nexus / ASR) at its core and a strong service-provider routing element built on BGP.
You will own installation and migration projects end-to-end and play a key role in our 24x7 on-call rota covering CNI customers and our own ISP/datacentre platform. The role is a mix of office and home-based working, with customer site visits for installation and support.
On-Call: Separate on-call allowance, plus paid callout payments — in addition to base salary
Location: Basildon, Essex — hybrid (office based with WFH on occasion and customer site visits)
Key Responsibilities
• Own network installation and migration projects end-to-end, liaising with the Network Manager, Account Managers and customers
• Maintain and develop our ISP and datacentre network, including core routing, peering/transit and edge connectivity
• Configure, manage and troubleshoot a multi-customer Firewall deployments (ForitGate/FortiManager/Sophos XG)
• Design, deploy and support Cisco Nexus (datacentre) and ASR (edge / service-provider) platforms
• Own BGP design, peering, route policy and troubleshooting across internal and customer networks
• Participate in the 24x7 out-of-hours on-call rota supporting CNI customers and our ISP/datacentre platform (on-call allowance and callout payments apply — see package details above)
• Maintain and develop monitoring and alerting systems
Essential Skills & Experience
• Demonstrable senior-level network engineering experience within an MSP, ISP or service-provider environment
• Fluent in BGP — design, peering, route policy and production troubleshooting
• Strong Cisco routing and switching, including Nexus (NX-OS, datacentre/vPC) and ASR (IOS-XE / edge)
• Solid Layer 2 / Layer 3 fundamentals — VLANs, trunking/tagging, STP, EIGRP, redundancy/HA design
• Datacentre network experience — resilient core, structured cabling, copper and fibre optic types/connectors
• Strong Firewall and Fortinet experience —Firewalling at scale with central management:
– FortiManager
– Zone-based firewalling and NAT
– IPS, web and AV filtering policies
– IPSec site-to-site and SSL VPN
• Understanding of Internet connectivity types (FTTC / FTTP / leased line) and transit/peering concepts
• Strong, methodical troubleshooting skills
• Excellent customer-facing manner and clear technical communication
• Full UK driving licence
Desirable
• Cisco CCNP (or equivalent) and Fortinet NSE / FCP certifications
• Multi-vendor switching and wireless exposure — HPE Aruba, Cisco Meraki, Ubiquiti UniFi
• Additional firewall vendor exposure — Sophos, Cisco ASA/Firepower
• Windows server concepts and virtualisation understanding (Hyper-V / VMware)
• Experience supporting CNI/Data Centre or other regulated, high-availability environments
